Above- The View From The Colony Site

A new book has just been published on the colony and the findings of the archaeologically investigations of Dr. Jeffery Brain. The book is entitled "Ft. St. George- An Archaeological Investigation of the 1607-1608 Popham Colony" by Jeffery Phipps Brain in collaboration with Peter Morrison and Pamela Crane. It has been published by The maine State Museum, The Maine Historic Preservation Commission, and The Maine Archaeological Society. It is now available at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. We hope to have some copies, along with the authors, at the celebration.

Led by Dr. Jeffrey Brain, "The Dig", as it is locally known, was conducted over a number of years from 1997, and ended in 2005. Definitive proof of the existence and location of the colony site buildings was the result. Dr. Brain not only found the Hunt map map (discovered in Spain in 1887) of the colony from 1607 to be accurate as to the location of many of the buildings and their relative size depicted on it, but also found evidence and artifacts from a very narrow slice in time, a very desirable return from archaeological investigations in that it truly gives the achaelogist a unique and finite time frame into which they can place their findings. This adds to the body of knowledge not just of this particular colony attempt but of other sites whose artifacts can also be placed by their similarities into the same time frame. A great number of people contributed their time and energy to the project, and a reunion of many of the people associated with "the dig" will be a large part of the commemoration.
